Give Me Another Long Neck Please???!!!

Check it out!! I finished this coaster I started a long while ago. I actually added it on http://www.onemilliongiraffes.com/ and am waiting for a confirmation email that they accepted it to go on the site. They actually exceeded the 1 million they were looking for. Cool huh?

Anyways - I used #10 blue & #10 pink and a #6 hook. It's gone to one of my friends in FL for her birthday next week. Hope she likes it!

This was not an easy project.....well it was ok once I got the hang of the giraffes. I think they're cool looking myself.

Hex Crazy

I guess I can't get enuff of hexes. I started some Persimmon with Light Peach borders. (The lighting doesn't do the colors justice) I'm using an F hook to do these so they're quite a bit bigger than my other ones that I'm making for the table cloth.

Ahem.......maybe I shouldn't have long weekends anymore??????

Anyways.....that's only part of what's on my hooks this week.

Weekend crafting- Harry Potter Wands

I found an awesome instructables on making your own Harry Potter inspired wands.  Since Em saw the movies over Christmas break and loved them (to the point that Harry is her boyfriend now and they share lunch everyday), I thought this would be a fun thing for a weekend project.  They actually turned out better than I expected.

I was worried that it wouldn't hold her attention since there was a good bit of waiting in better paint coats, but she hung in there.  She originally requested 'a million diamonds' on her wand, but I talked her down to just a few.

I am pleasantly surprised at how they turned out.  We might work up some more next weekend for all the cousins and I'll take pics during the process. 

The amazing art of micro-crochet

I'll admit it, I have yarn art envy.  I have never been able to crochet; I've attempted it many times and it always turns into a strange snake like thing.  I've never even tried knitting because I have no faith in my abilities.  My mom is a great crocheter and Nikki and Kathy are pretty badass too.  But, if anything could inspire me to pick up the needle and try again it's this:

Yes, that is a crochet turtle on a fingertip.  And it's legs are movable!  WTF!  How is this even possible?

This is from Etsy seller Muffa.  I saw some of her work a while back on another site, but came across it again during a recent Etsy binge.  I am in awe of her work.  I cannot believe that this is done with thread.  And what kind of needle would you use?  I have no idea.  But really, how awesome is this?

Fallen For The Wash

I think I have figured out what to make almost everyone this year for Christmas! For many reasons but the most sensible to me is they are quick and easy and voila! Done! I have fallen for the wash cloth....well not the wash cloth, but this and many more kinda like it!

They will not all be exactly like this one and there lies the beauty of it. Between different colors and different patterns I can make many that are not alike. Kinda like you and I going to different schools together! Ahem.....yea so shoot me. You get my drift.

I was also thinking about dabbling in making my own letters (crochet of course) and sewing the first initial on to make it even more personalized. Whatcha think?? I'll have to experiment and think on that.

I worked this one up in two days. The starting chain was an even number, 42 I think. The second round and each thereafter consisted of ch 1, sk 1, sc in next st, then hdc in the same st, *sk 1, sc & hdc in same st*. How simple is that? And just look at the pattern it created! Can ya blame me for falling in love with it? I liked it so much that I didn't even put a border around it...I liked it like it is. Just added a loop to hang it with.

Can you just see yourself in the shower with this wash cloth? Move over loofah, you've met your match! If you've never washed with a wash cloth made out of #3 thread you really don't know what you're missing. Exfoliating will never be the same again! :o)

Right then....I'm off.......to the showa.....with my new best bud......lol

PS/I forgot to say that I crocheted this with a C hook. And I started another one last night with teal thread, same hook, same stitches, only all of the stitches are going in the back loop and what a difference in the look of the pattern. I'll be back later to show you that one.

The First of Many

Happy Monday!

I know it's early but I am the early bird that caught that pesky worm! He's history! lol

This is the first of many little tangerine and tan hexagons that I will be crocheting. The idea behind them is that I will make a tablecloth for my daughter for next Christmas. (Christmas??!! Yes folks, Christmas. Believe me, it'll be here again before you know it and I, for one, am getting an early start.) You see, I have this tendency to start a large project and then get bored with it and I will put it down until I am ready to pick it back up again OR get down to the wire and then I'm scrambling to get it done.

Why you say?? Well, fortunately I am not the only crochet crafter that does this stupid thing, but it's just something that we share. The quick and easy projects, with instant 'crochetification' is what drives a lot of us hookers.

Although I am really stoked about this project, and I am soooo in love with this particular hexie. I found a real quick and easy hexie that I just love doing in this pattern. (The link takes you to the sign in on the Lion Brand site. Sign up is free...go for it...you won't be disappointed.) It is motif II. I had been searching for one specifically for a tablecloth in all of my printed (gazillions) of patterns. That was my first obstacle.

Next I had to decide colors, type of thread (size), hook size, (size DOES matter) and lastly a pattern. So once I found the hexie I went through the colored threads that I had on hand. I love working with #3 thread.

My daughter's kitchen is yellow, with light brown tile floors. In my stash I had tangerine, tan and lime balls of #3 thread. I put them together and loved the combination. The lime will be the joining color (to join the hexies together once they're made).

Next I got out a #2 Boye hook and made a tangerine hexagon using the hexie pattern I found. When I finished it (minus the last round of the pattern), it measured 3" across and 3.25" point to point. My daughter's table is a round wood table and my best guestimate is that it's about 4' in diameter.

So I then sat down with graph paper and drew out hexagons together until I got a shape I liked. I multiplied the number of hexies I would need to go across and up and down until I reached roughly 4'. (You have to remember that the joining is going to add to the overall length and width, so if you already have at least 4' in L & W in hexies then you will be good once the joining is done, it'll be bigger and have some kind of drape, or hang over to it. (In my mind anyway) Right??

Ok, so now you'll need to figure out your scheme - that is to say, what kind of pattern do you want to make? After making 10 copies of my hexied graph paper, I got out my colored pencils and started coloring different patterns. The one in the first pic is what was most pleasing to my eye. I only used the orange to color this one as it was quicker and easier for me. I know the remaining hexies will be tan.

So then my last thing to work out is how many tangerine and how many tan hexies will I need to crochet? For this pattern I have chosen, I will need 84 tangerine hexies and 100 tan hexies.

Now all that's left is to crochet my hexies, then the fun begins with the joining. I still haven't decided how exactly I'm going to join them but I have a little bit of time to think on it.

More to come on this 'citrusy' tablecloth. I'm excited about it!
