I guess I can't get enuff of hexes. I started some Persimmon with Light Peach borders. (The lighting doesn't do the colors justice) I'm using an F hook to do these so they're quite a bit bigger than my other ones that I'm making for the table cloth.
Ahem.......maybe I shouldn't have long weekends anymore??????

I found an awesome instructables on making your own Harry Potter inspired wands. Since Em saw the movies over Christmas break and loved them (to the point that Harry is her boyfriend now and they share lunch everyday), I thought this would be a fun thing for a weekend project. They actually turned out better than I expected.

I was worried that it wouldn't hold her attention since there was a good bit of waiting in better paint coats, but she hung in there. She originally requested 'a million diamonds' on her wand, but I talked her down to just a few.
I am pleasantly surprised at how they turned out. We might work up some more next weekend for all the cousins and I'll take pics during the process.

This #3 teal thread just got dried out from taking a coffee bath. My stupidity. And the thing is that you can see the coffee on the ball of thread but not so much when you crochet with it. White would be a totally different story.

I’ve been trying for ages to figure out what I wanted my first post to be. I thought, “what am I nerdy about?” and then I remembered that I’ve spent the last 24 hours watching clips, finding gifs, and reading quotes all in preparation for the return of the BEST comedy show on TV – Community.
I know what some of you are thinking – “What is this community thing you speak of? Modern Family/Glee/Big Bang/insert-comedy-show-here is the best comedy on TV! Yours wasn’t even nominated for an Emmy!” Sadly, my friends, you are right. Somehow, the genius that is Community has been overlooked by viewers and awards alike. But, critics have been gushing about this show (and begging you to watch it, like me) for ages, and it’s time you jumped on the Greendale bandwagon.
Let me lay it out for you: Community takes place at Greendale Community college. A bunch of misfits have formed a study group, and hijinks ensue every week. And I mean, come on, you can’t go wrong with a cast that includes Joel McHale (the Soup), Donald Glover (youngest writer ever for 30 Rock), John Oliver (The Daily Show), Alison Brie (Mad Men), Ken Jeong (the crazy Asian man from The Hangover), and of course, Chevy Chase. Don’t forget some of their guest stars: Betty White, Jack Black, Patton Oswalt, Owen Wilson, Anthony Michael Hall, and Tony Hale.

Episode wise – Modern Warfare is considered the crème de la crème of Community, parodying almost every action/apocalypse movie out there while still maintaining the storyline and character development. The show has done everything from a “bottle” episode to a Halloween zombie episode (soundtrack by ABBA) to a claymation Christmas special – complete with songs - and just about everything in between.
That may seem like a lot of links, but if I can’t convince that this show is worth half an hour of your Thursday (8 on NBC), than I have truly failed. As someone who will be unable to see any episodes for the next four months (no Hulu in Amman), I beg of you to watch this show on my behalf.

I'll admit it, I have yarn art envy. I have never been able to crochet; I've attempted it many times and it always turns into a strange snake like thing. I've never even tried knitting because I have no faith in my abilities. My mom is a great crocheter and Nikki and Kathy are pretty badass too. This is from Etsy seller Muffa. I saw some of her work a while back on another site, but came across it again during a recent Etsy binge. I am in awe of her work. I cannot believe that this is done with thread. And what kind of needle would you use? I have no idea. But really, how awesome is this?
I think I have figured out what to make almost everyone this year for Christmas! For many reasons but the most sensible to me is they are quick and easy and voila! Done! I have fallen for the wash cloth....well not the wash cloth, but this and many more kinda like it!
They will not all be exactly like this one and there lies the beauty of it. Between different colors and different patterns I can make many that are not alike. Kinda like you and I going to different schools together! Ahem.....yea so shoot me. You get my drift.
I was also thinking about dabbling in making my own letters (crochet of course) and sewing the first initial on to make it even more personalized. Whatcha think?? I'll have to experiment and think on that.
I worked this one up in two days. The starting chain was an even number, 42 I think. The second round and each thereafter consisted of ch 1, sk 1, sc in next st, then hdc in the same st, *sk 1, sc & hdc in same st*. How simple is that? And just look at the pattern it created! Can ya blame me for falling in love with it? I liked it so much that I didn't even put a border around it...I liked it like it is. Just added a loop to hang it with.
Can you just see yourself in the shower with this wash cloth? Move over loofah, you've met your match! If you've never washed with a wash cloth made out of #3 thread you really don't know what you're missing. Exfoliating will never be the same again! :o)

PS/I forgot to say that I crocheted this with a C hook. And I started another one last night with teal thread, same hook, same stitches, only all of the stitches are going in the back loop and what a difference in the look of the pattern. I'll be back later to show you that one.
Leave it to Amanda Palmer to add another euphemism for vagina to our language. I've never heard Map of Tasmania used before, but I kind of like it. Gives it a global, world traveler feel. I got to hand it to Palmer, she is a gutsy chic that puts it all out there (literally) and has absolutely no fear. How else will you know where you're going? The indispensable map is both a thing of beauty and an object of scorn. Beauty when it gets you where you need to go, scorn when you can't make head or tail of it. Maps have seen me through many a quagmire, and also helped to create a few.
There is an old Emirati proverb to encourage travelers: المسافر له في البحر طريق
It roughly translates to "there is always a path in the sea." However, sometimes that path can be difficult to find without a trusty map at your side.
As I begin the journey of writing for the Geek Girl Nation blog, I would like to share with you the story of one of my very favorite maps of all time.
This is a one of a kind specially drawn map to a secret waterfall in Nanu Oya, Sri Lanka. I have to admit that I nearly squealed with joy when the convenience store clerk at the train station ripped out a piece of ledger paper to draw it for me. It was accompanied by verbal instructions but I think the map is just about the coolest souvenir I could ever hope to receive. And yes, I still have it.
When I was a little girl I always bought in to the "You can be anything you want to be!" hype. I thought of all kinds of cool stuff to be, but finally settled on a favorite: A Mommy. I mean, sure, the President might be in charge of some important stuff, but Mommies *literally* make people. Although the journey to adulthood, and Mommihood was longer and way harder than I thought, I've arrived. My son is turning one this week, so I've been thinking a great deal about the sort of things about which I want him to learn; the things about which I hope he has great passion. You know, what will be the focus of his inner geek, I mean, soul. Then I thought about the kinds of things we already do with him...
Like celebrating Hothlanta for the Snowpacolypse of 2011, and I remembered what else we've already done this year...

How awesome are these? I am constantly amazed at things that can be built with Legos, but the fact that folks are customizing things like Angry Birds melts my geek heart...
I know it's early but I am the early bird that caught that pesky worm! He's history! lol
This is the first of many little tangerine and tan hexagons that I will be crocheting. The idea behind them is that I will make a tablecloth for my daughter for next Christmas. (Christmas??!! Yes folks, Christmas. Believe me, it'll be here again before you know it and I, for one, am getting an early start.) You see, I have this tendency to start a large project and then get bored with it and I will put it down until I am ready to pick it back up again OR get down to the wire and then I'm scrambling to get it done.
Why you say?? Well, fortunately I am not the only crochet crafter that does this stupid thing, but it's just something that we share. The quick and easy projects, with instant 'crochetification' is what drives a lot of us hookers.
Although I am really stoked about this project, and I am soooo in love with this particular hexie. I found a real quick and easy hexie that I just love doing in this pattern. (The link takes you to the sign in on the Lion Brand site. Sign up is free...go for it...you won't be disappointed.) It is motif II. I had been searching for one specifically for a tablecloth in all of my printed (gazillions) of patterns. That was my first obstacle.
Next I had to decide colors, type of thread (size), hook size, (size DOES matter) and lastly a pattern. So once I found the hexie I went through the colored threads that I had on hand. I love working with #3 thread.
My daughter's kitchen is yellow, with light brown tile floors. In my stash I had tangerine, tan and lime balls of #3 thread. I put them together and loved the combination. The lime will be the joining color (to join the hexies together once they're made).
Next I got out a #2 Boye hook and made a tangerine hexagon using the hexie pattern I found. When I finished it (minus the last round of the pattern), it measured 3" across and 3.25" point to point. My daughter's table is a round wood table and my best guestimate is that it's about 4' in diameter.
So I then sat down with graph paper and drew out hexagons together until I got a shape I liked. I multiplied the number of hexies I would need to go across and up and down until I reached roughly 4'. (You have to remember that the joining is going to add to the overall length and width, so if you already have at least 4' in L & W in hexies then you will be good once the joining is done, it'll be bigger and have some kind of drape, or hang over to it. (In my mind anyway) Right??
Ok, so now you'll need to figure out your scheme - that is to say, what kind of pattern do you want to make? After making 10 copies of my hexied graph paper, I got out my colored pencils and started coloring different patterns. The one in the first pic is what was most pleasing to my eye. I only used the orange to color this one as it was quicker and easier for me. I know the remaining hexies will be tan.
So then my last thing to work out is how many tangerine and how many tan hexies will I need to crochet? For this pattern I have chosen, I will need 84 tangerine hexies and 100 tan hexies.
Now all that's left is to crochet my hexies, then the fun begins with the joining. I still haven't decided how exactly I'm going to join them but I have a little bit of time to think on it.
More to come on this 'citrusy' tablecloth. I'm excited about it!
